Overview

SEED is the outcome of an agreement signed by the Canadian Grant and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources/ JREEEF. It operates in Ajloun Governorate and Deir Alla District. SEED is jointly funded by JREEEF, with a 10% contribution, and the Canadian Government, with a 90% contribution. It aims to develop local communities by raising awareness and implement EE & RE technologies in sectors like: households, government institutions, selected public schools and healthcare centers, and municipalities.

Strategic Partners and Funders

Canada Global Affairs is the main strategic partner and funder for SEED that is being implemented by the Canadian firm Cowater International.

Timeline

The four-year project commenced its activities in March 2016 and shall end in 2020

Work pillars

SEED works on spinning the wheel of sustainable economic growth in Ajloun and Deir Alla through raising awareness and implementing EE&RE solutions. It is active in three areas:

First Area Improving living conditions in Ajloun and Deir Alla through providing optimal energy solutions in the field of energy conservation and renewable energy.

This area has the following levels:

  1. Household Level.
  2. Government Buildings Level which includes implementing EE solutions/ or RE solutions, or both.
  3. Tourism Sector Level.

 

  • Household Level:

Replacing old light lamps with energy saving LED light lamps. Each house is given five bulbs. The total number of would-be installed LED units is 24,000.

Project to install 1500 PV systems (capacity: 2kWp) in houses.

Project to install 1121 solar water heaters (capacity: 200 Liter) in houses.

  • Government Buildings Level which includes implementing EE solutions/ or RE solutions, or both for the following:

EE&RE solutions for 11 government buildings in six schools and five healthcare centers. This included replacing light lamps, heating and cooling, installing solar water heaters and PV system to reduce energy costs. This is in addition to establishing RE lab in schools.

RE solutions in Deir Alla and Muaddi municipalities through installing two photovoltaic stations with a capacity of (950) KW for each municipality.

  • Tourism Sector Level:

Installing PV system in historical Ajloun Castle with a capacity of 50 kWp.

Installing PV system in four watching towers belonging to Ajloun forests.

 

Second Area Training, Employment, Companies’ Support, and Creativity in EE&RE Field

This area focuses on enhancing skills and increasing employment opportunities for workers in the field of energy. The project organizes different technical training for employment purposes, which enhance the trainers' competitiveness and increase their chances of finding job opportunities in the energy sector. SEED is also keen on networking with the labor market and supporting SMEs in Ajloun and Deir Alla and encouraging them to adopt creative EE&RE solutions.

Third Area Creating a Rich Environment for the Growth of the Energy Sector in Jordan

SEED provides the technical support for the electricity distribution companies' EE & RE related activities. The project offers JREEEF different ways of support, including: providing specialists, cover the expenses of six full-time engineers working in the Fund, providing technical consultation services to EMRC; especially in relation to PV systems installation guidelines. The project also develops computational tools that increase citizens' awareness of EE & RE systems.
